Event Description:

Teams of two to three students construct a barge from the materials provided before the contest. Points toward the final score are awarded for a quiz and for the maximal amount of weight the barge can carry before it sinks. Both the building and the loading of the boat have to be performed within a specified time limit determined by the judges.

Event Location and Time:

Randall Building,
Rooms 1221 and 1233

Time:
10:30 - 11:50 a.m.
and 1:00 p.m. – 2:50 p.m.

Apparatus and Materials:

Each team will be provided the following material before the event.

  • 2 sheet of standard copy paper, 11" by 8˝" (Letter Size)
  • 12 standard 1" paperclips
  • one crayon

Only the materials provided are allowed in construction of the barge.

  • 2" washers as ballast

Event Rules:

Teams:  Each team shall have no less than two and no more than three members.

Quiz: Prior to the start of the competition each team will take a written quiz worth 30% of the total score. The time allotted for the quiz is 10 minutes.

Building: Only the materials provided before the event are permissible in building the barge. One of the sheets of copy paper should form the hull of the vessel, while the other one may be cut up to form stabilizing elements.

Loading: Only one washer at a time may be added to the barge once it has been put into the water tank. However, the barge may be preloaded before launch. Mind: if the barge sinks immediately due to too heavy preload, no points will be awarded!

There is a mandatory waiting period of 5 seconds between adding washers to the barge (compare “Sinking” below). The total loading time, defined as the time from placing the barge in the water to time-out, is 3 minutes.

Ballast: The ballast are standard 2" washers; each washer loaded before sinking is awarded one point.

Sinking: A barge is considered sunk if it (a) starts taking water and starts to sink within 5 seconds after a ballast weight is added (sunk by too heavy load), (b) starts to take on water continuously through a leak (sunk by leaking), or (c) when it loses any of its freight (sunk by capsizing).

Timeout: at the end of the contest, when timeout is declared, no more weight may be added to the barges and the total weight of those barges still floating will be tallied.

If the barge is still afloat (i.e. judged to be not sunk) at the time of time-out, a 5 point bonus will be awarded to the team.

Judging Criteria:

Total Score:  The total score will be determined as follows:
    Total Score = (Quiz score x 0.30) + (Number of ballast washers + time-out bonus) x 0.70.

Ties: In the event of a tie, the team whose barge was still afloat at timeout shall be declared the winner. Should a tie still exist, the team with the higher quiz score shall be declared winner. If one or more teams are still tied after this, they shall share first place.

Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the teams with the highest three scores, respectively.
